DMK members select Food Bank of Iowa as 2013 Sponsored Charity

The Des Moines Kubb Board of Directors is proud to announce that our members have elected to sponsor Food Bank of Iowa as our charity of choice for 2013. Food Bank of Iowa has been operating for over twenty years and provides services to partner agencies in 55 Iowa counties in an effort to combat the issue of hunger in our state. In addition to providing aid to their partner agencies, Food Bank of Iowa also manages several programs directly, among which is Backpack Buddies - a program designed to lessen the
consequence of chronic childhood hunger by providing a sack of
kid-friendly foods to low-income elementary school children on weekends
when they do not have access to the federal free and reduced-price meal
program. It is a regrettable fact that although Iowa is often known as the "Food Capitol of the World" it is estimated that 1-in-5 Iowa children does not have enough to eat. Des Moines Kubb will be doing what we can to help Food Bank of Iowa combat this problem with the proceeds from our annual Fall Klassic tournament and possibly by other means throughout the year as well.
Thank you to all of our members who participated in this year's charity selection, and we hope that everyone will help us work toward our mission of using Kubb to help those in need. Let's keep making an impact!

Team Knockerheads wins the 2013 Minnesota Kubb Tournament
52 Teams played kubb on a frozen lake in the Twin Cities Saturday, making the 2013 Winter Kubb Tournament the 2nd largest kubb tournament in the United States (and possibly North America). In the end it came down to a battle with the 2010 U.S. National Champions, The Ringers. Chris and Grant going 5 for 5 on the initial tosses in the second game ultimately gave Team Knockerheads a significant advantage, and defeated a very strong and very accurate team. From all of us at Des Moines Kubb, we thank Eric Goplin and his entire volunteer crew for putting together an amazing tournament.

Kubb (pronounced koob) is one of the funnest outdoor games....ever!
Kubb is an easy to learn, yet strategy-rich, lawn game that has been played for over 1,000 years. It is said to be invented by the Vikings, and has been nicknamed "Viking Chess."
Kubb can be simply described as a combination of bowling and horseshoes. Today's version is said to have originated on the island of Gotland, Sweden.
The ultimate object of the game is to knock over the opposing team's kubbs and the King, before they knock over yours. There is a certain level of strategy that needs to be used by players, and there are many variants and different ways to play the game...it never gets old. And in this game the king rules all...if a team knocks over the king before the end of the game, you lose.
