Championship Week Day 6, 7, and 8

Posted by Josh Feathers on Sunday, July 14, 2013, In : Nationals
Day 6:
Saturday. The big day. The party. Sprinkles in the morning, cloudy in the afternoon, and enough wind to keep the pesky bugs away. Perfect kubb weather. The day started as it had for years before, some warmups, a captains meeting, some swag purchases and a general milling about meeting old friends and learning new names. That is what the round robins are for. Saturday had a Sunday matchup atmosphere for two teams. KingPin and Leinenkubbels Light was a round robin match that could have ea...

Championship Week 2013: Day 5

Posted by Josh Feathers on Saturday, July 13, 2013, In : Nationals
Sardines. That's what we were. And we will blame JP Larson. That's how we spent the hour and a half drive to Eau Claire this morning. But we did it for the cause. Eau Claire had a waiting list (yes, a WAITING LIST) for kubb sets, and we decided to help a friend and deliver some much needed sets to the Local Store. The Subaru was low, and six sets somehow fit with all our stuff. Slightly uncomfortable, we trekked over to the big EAU.

(I think someone owes the girls a beer (hint: It's JP)

We drov...

Championship Week 2013: Day 4

Posted by Josh Feathers on Friday, July 12, 2013, In : Nationals
Breakfast, coffee, Hockey Giant, Ikea. That's how you start a morning in the Twin Cities. When you play beer league it goes without saying that you are going to stop at Hockey Giant and browse. Swag, sticks, skates, gear bags, and even hockey goals. The boys looked at it all. We bought nothing, but looked at everything, and the only shirts we really wanted were sold out. Stupid hockey.

(Tony trying on some $1,500.00 pads.)

Next was Ikea. What a workout! I felt like we walked 5 miles. That place...

Championship Week 2013: Day 3

Posted by Josh Feathers on Thursday, July 11, 2013, In : Nationals
We got off to a bright and early start heading north on I-35. Somehow, we were able to fit all our stuff into the back of the Subaru. I would have lost the bet if any one would have said "10 bucks says we can fit it all in the back of the Subaru." Luckily, nobody said that, because I would have lost. It fit. Gas saved: $50.00 a couple. BAM!

Dexter rode with us for half the trip. Dexter is Tony and Amy's little dog, and he was excited to be a part of our trip. Normally, Dexter drools everywhere...

Championship Week 2013: Day 2

Posted by Josh Feathers on Wednesday, July 10, 2013, In : Nationals
Today was all about the swag. I got a sneak peek at the R2-Kubb2 shirts and they are pretty badass. I also got the first proof on the Fall Kubb Klassic shirts and we intend to release the design shortly after Nationals. I cannot say enough about this year's design; I think it is top 1 or 2 that we have done so far. Mary keeps finding ways to kill it on the Fall tournament shirts. Additionally, Jaime and I made some shirts today using some pretty high quality transfer paper. And I had to choos...

Championship Week Begins

Posted by Josh Feathers on Monday, July 8, 2013, In : Nationals
As some of you know, and more will find out, I did a daily blog last year all during Championship Week. You can see last year's daily blog right here, and it's actually fun to look back and see all the stuff we did. Some may know that we generally go up early and stay late for the U.S. National Kubb Championship. It just seems appropriate to make one of the biggest kubb parties in the country a week-long event. There are plenty of breweries to hit along the way. Jaime and I coordinate an annu...

Nationals 2012 Wrap Up

Posted by Chris Hodges on Wednesday, July 18, 2012, In : Nationals

Hey DMK!

I want to start by thanking everybody that made the trip up to Eau Claire this past weekend – we rolled DEEP this year kid! Twenty-Three playing members (plus various family, friends, looky-loos, and groupies of questionable repute) made for easily the best showing by our club at any event outside our area code, and one of the largest groups of DMK members in one place at one time ever! Secondly, on behalf of everybody that was there and playing, thanks to all of you at home ...

Championship Week: Day 6

Posted by Josh Feathers on Saturday, July 14, 2012, In : Nationals
Two words.

HOLY WOW!

A beautiful day filled with beautiful kubb. It was great meeting new teams and players, seeing old friends, and japing with the best in the business.

Some games from DMK that really took the stage today:

Chicks with Sticks vs. The Farfars (Consolation Game)

I think the girls had a crush on these boys. The Farfars not only won the single elimination game, they also won the hearts of the 6 person all-girl DMK team. That's respect!

Pitch Slap vs. Kubbitz

A battle of drills. Tony Ha...

Championship Week: Day 5

Posted by Josh Feathers on Friday, July 13, 2012, In : Nationals

Okay boys and girls. This is going to be quick. Tomorrow is a big day.

My phone blew up, and I wasn't able to post a few of the pictures I wanted from Day 4, so here they are:

(Team Kubbom, with their secret mystery 4th player)

(Lazy monk. Or lazy blogger that can't rotate clockwise)

Slept like crap last night and for once the alarm wakes me up. Tomorrow is go-time, and I'm anxious to get to the soccer park to work on some drilling. I leave Tony in the dust as I grab a banana, and a coffee and ma...

Championship Week: Day 4

Posted by Josh Feathers on Friday, July 13, 2012, In : Nationals

Got up early today and made sure to check in with the "pack" back home. Steve provided an update on the state of things in Corn Country:

Dobbie,

Leaving work early today just because I can and I really need to get some practice in BEFORE getting to Eau Claire. I'm not sure what the slight nausea is that I feel but I think it's nerves thinking about all of the GREAT teams we have to beat just to get to the sweet sixteen.

The van made it out of the shop repaired and ready to make the trip to Eau C...

Championship Week: Day 3

Posted by Josh Feathers on Wednesday, July 11, 2012, In : Nationals
Woke up early and checked my email and got some news from home. My Uncle Steve from Team Kubb'd sent me a note:

_______________________

Dob, Coordinated bringing "stuff" to Nationals with Chris Hodges.
Canopies - check
Coolers - check
Banners - check
Chairs - check
Water jug - check

Just hope the van gets out of the shop in time for the trip to Nationals. What I hoped was an inexpensive and easy fix has turned into a $700 plus repair. However, if the A/C isn't working the van is staying at home and ...

Championship Week: Day 2

Posted by Josh Feathers on Wednesday, July 11, 2012, In : Nationals

7:55 a.m.
The Jeep is loaded, and the kids are smushed in like sardines. We don't have room for a cooler, but I have been wanting to get a new monster cooler for a while, so we will be shopping for one on the road (once the kids free up some space.) We are dropping them off at camp, and with them the 3 bags of stuff they need for camp.

Back to the cooler....the cooler decision is important. I need one with wheels, that is a requirement. I need one with the ability to be modded with lights (th...

Championship Week: Day 1

Posted by Josh Feathers on Tuesday, July 10, 2012, In : Nationals
So the idea here is to write each day leading up to the U.S National Kubb Championship. Here in Des Moines this is a pretty big week for our kubbers, full of social media participation, last minute practices, and coordination of getting more than 20 players to Eau Claire for a Saturday morning start. Some of us are starting the party early (like Jaime and I are), some are taking a few days off, and there are a few that have work and family commitments that only allow them a Friday departure. ...

2011 U.S. Nationals Kubb Championship (What a ride...)

Posted by Chris Hodges on Monday, July 18, 2011, In : Nationals

The Des Moines Kubb Club took six teams on a trip to Eau Claire, Wisconsin to compete against 84 teams in the largest Kubb tournament ever held in North America; The 2011 U.S. National Kubb Championship. The end of the story is we wonmore than twice as many games as we lost (58 wins and 28 losses - none of our teams finished with a losing record), half of our teams finished tied for 9th place or better (with another taking 3rd in a consolation bracket), and we brought the title of National Ch...

One dot one

Posted by Josh Feathers on Saturday, February 19, 2011, In : Nationals
Did you see that we updated the rules to v1.1. The 'rules committee' has been in deep debate around the new rule-set. Passions are running high, arguments have spiraled out of control, and the use of hyperbole and rhetoric has been mildly excessive. Lines have been crossed, and good nature has taken the backseat to intimidation tactics, verbal abuse, and (must I say) stinkeye.

But such is the life of a tournament organizer and his evil rule minions.....

While the thought of Eric Anderson actua...

The Results are in

Posted by Josh Feathers on Wednesday, August 11, 2010, In : Nationals
I have received many email responses to the Top 10 questions, and after careful review of what was provided, below are the answers to these very important questions:

10. I saw the referee disqualify a player...who was it and what for?
A team was using the brutal and feared "shin technique" in round robin. The goal of the shin technique is to bring your competition to their knees and concede the game. This is done by throwing your batons with excessive force at your opponents lower body, attempt...

Oh no, a Top 10 list about the U.S. Nationals

Posted by Josh Feathers on Thursday, July 22, 2010, In : Nationals
Well, this being my first...ummm...ya know, I figure I may as well keep it short, simple, and funny (the first two I can guarantee). I'm not sure exactly where this will go, or how long my OCD will last, so this may just end up being my FIRST and LAST....thing....ever. And while I still have a bit of the adrenaline rush still running through my veins from Nationals, namely from that DEFAULT team we played to start the whole tournament, I figured I would take a stab at this...

Anywhoo, I asked ...
