How To Pronounce Kubb

Posted by Josh Feathers on Wednesday, May 16, 2012, In : History

So there’s this guy…..

And he started making up pronunciations for words, and I have laughed very much due to this guy. It is a satirical play on the actual Pronunciation Book, a series of Youtube videos to help people pronounce different English words appropriately.

Here is an actual Youtube video from Pronunciation Book:

And here is one from the "dieloushious" Pronunciation Guide:

 See the difference!?

I am a fan! It is just a bunch of ridiculous pronunciations; so stupid it’s...

Inkastare Tavling

Posted by Josh Feathers on Friday, April 13, 2012, In : Variants
Based on the Inkastare Tavling scoring system built by GVB, I painted by own "house", threw 10, and scored them.

I got this group scored at:

2 at 3 points = 6
5 at 2 points = 10
3 at 1 point = 3

Total: 19

I like the idea of this "skills competition" like this, and 8m shot competitions. I want to see this play out someday in a tournament. You can continue the discussion at ask.planetkubb.com, specifically the question "How about a Kubb Tossing as its Own Contest".

Kubb Rescue Squad

Posted by Josh Feathers on Friday, March 16, 2012, In : Strategy

We have all had that bad bounce. Maybe it was a “clack. Perhaps your drill was a lame duck and went left instead of right. Maybe the pitch had a twig or pine cone on it, and the kubb bounced a direction that seemed to defy physics. Maybe you threw a punishment kubb, and you didn’t topple it on your turn.

It may be time to call in the Kubb Rescue Squad:

There is no higher risk play in kubb than the rescue. But when it works it can completely swing the game in your favor.

The rules ...

Variant - Cutthroat

Posted by The Kubbmaster General on Monday, March 7, 2011, In : Variants

For a little added pressure in the end game some groups use the following house-rule:

"If a team makes a legal attack on the King and fails to topple it, their turn immediately ends and the opposing team is allowed a single legal attack at the King and an opportunity to win the game, regardless of how many Field Kubbs or Base Kubbs they have remaining."

FUN FACT: This "Variant" is apparently the standard in New Zealand, and as such we have heard this referred to as "Kiwi Rules"

Variant - Towers

Posted by Josh Feathers on Tuesday, February 1, 2011, In : Variants

Towers (Stacking)

Easily the most common variant is the use of "Towers" or Kubb stacking. (In fact, this is the only variant popular enough to warrant mention in the World Championship rules.) Below is a standardized breakdown of stacking rules and phases:

<!--[if !supportLists]-->1.    <!--[endif]-->If a thrown Field Kubb strikes and topples another Field Kubb already in play, then the two Field Kubbs should be stacked vertically one on top of the other.

Variant - Four to Start

Posted by The Kubbmaster General on Wednesday, January 19, 2011, In : Variants
By competition rules the first team to throw uses all 6 Batons (unless they topple all 5 Base Kubbs with their first 5 Batons) and this is considered by some players to be too much of an advantage (the Kubbmaster General included). “Four to Start” limits the opening team to only throwing 4 batons on the first turn, with each team throwing all 6 thereafter. In most social games or games amongst beginning players the extra two batons probably won't make that much difference, but at higher l...

The Most Beautiful....

Posted by Josh Feathers on Tuesday, October 26, 2010, In : Kubb Sets
Here is the kubb set built by Tim Arends of Arends Production Services; arguably the most beautiful set ever played:

This set went at the 2010 Fall Kubb Klassic for a measly $165.00 - all proceeds going to Iowa CASA
I will try to get photos of it after it has been played (oh yeah, the proud owner played it that night).

I would like to compile some of the nicest sets ever made; please send me photos of these works of art and I will share them in future "these".
